…And I enthusiastically approve!
It has just been revealed that Élodie Yung will be playing the role of Elektra in the second season of Daredevil on Netflix. Now I know nothing of her acting skills, but physically she would appear to be the perfect fit, as a quick Google image search revealed:
Then there are these shots from G.I. Joe: Retaliation, where she’s playing a ninja named Jinx, a character whose taste in couture overlaps with Elektra’s more than a little:
In fact, any shot of Yung in red feels like Elektra:
For reference, the real Elektra:
Want to feel old (if you’re anywhere close to my age, that is)? Yung was born in February 1981, about three to four months after Elektra made her debut in the pages of Daredevil #168 (cover date January 1981, which means it went on sale about three months earlier).
In addition to the aforementioned Joe flick, she also appeared in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. She is also a black belt in karate, which should come in handy.
While Jennifer Garner is a lovely woman and a more than competent actress, she never fit as Elektra for me. She looks too midwest, too cornfed, too whitebread. Elektra needs to look exotic and dangerous. She needs to drip sexuality and violence from every pore.
Maybe Yung flops, ultimately, but she’s still a lot closer, physically, to the comic character than anything we’ve seen before. If they follow Frank Miller’s original storyline with religious zeal, we could be in for some great television.
